May 14, 2009


DOSAF: Shannon George

  • Orientation starts , need 2 people at sac for booth 12:15 -> 1:30, Need people to speak to orientation session by next week.  sessions at 9:20 and 11:20


DOSAC: Ryan Frazier

  • Summer sports begin, rosters available.  Kickball and Ultimate Frisbee.  Turn in at captains meeting, on roster. Save the Date on the 12th


DOSR: Race Nichols

  • Freshmen orientation game night.  Every Thursday of orientation. 9-> 11, every society must be represented.  Others welcome.  Sign-up.


DOPR: Belinda Casanova

  • Snacks this weekend or next week early.  Food soon.

  • Check out the website. There have been several updates including a new Google Calendar that you can subscribe which includes all council events.
  • Next meeting we will have committee sign-ups. Start thinking about what committee you want to serve on.
  • We will be holding elections for 2nd, 3rd, and PhD students before the end of the month.  More information to come soon.
  • Society game night is fast approaching. Times and dates are on the new calendar. We will need volunteers, but we are still in the planning phase.

  • Elections will be VERY soon.  Expect an email very soon with details.
  • Every member of council is required to participate in a committee.  Sign-ups will be very soon as well.
  • If you haven't yet looked at the council website, it has been updated with lots of new information including a nifty calendar.
  • While you are on the website check out the dates for the Society Game Nights, we will need lots of volunteers to socialize with the freshman.  Nothing stressful, just some video games.

  • Attend game night tonight!  We have had low attendance from council members this past Monday.  The reminder email has already gone out so no excuses!
  • The freshman handbook this year will be a OneNote file.
    • Each department will be given a page and requests have been sent out to each department to complete their one page of content.
    • SSSC will complete all of the other pages with content about Speed School and some about the university in general.
    • If anyone is interested in helping out please contact me: doa@speedcouncil.org
    • This is a big project and we are hoping to make a very comprehensive manual.
  • If you haven't checked out council's calendar at http://speedcouncil.org/calendar you really should because there are now links for you to subscribe to it.  It also has almost every council event.
  • We should be approving the election results at today's meeting.

  • Discussion was introduced about amending Constitution/by-laws to remove members who don't attend meeting, this includes reps. 
    • We need to send out reminders earlier.
    • Members seem to support the idea of consequences for not showing up.

  • A new method of tracking council member attendance has just been implemented.  This is a much more accurate way of tracking member attendance from one meeting to another.  Additionally, if you like it or not, your attendance history is now available on http://speedcouncil.org
    • Each council member now has a green, yellow, or red status based on their attendance record to indicate if they are in good standing, are at a warning level on attendance, or are in bad standing.
    • We have far too many council members in bad standing and hopefully making this information easily available will help encourage attendance.
    • Also, if you ever think you were not recorded or want to make sure you were marked as excused, you can now check online.

  • Working on compiling the freshman handbook.  This year it is going to be a OneNote file.  If anyone is willing to help out contact me via email.  There is a lot of work that still needs to be done before the start of the fall semester.
  • Council Website has undergone some major improvements.  Check it out!
  • Committee members are now listed on the website.  If youa are not on a committee it is marked next to your name.
  • Attendance standing is listed on the website as well next to your name.
  • Achievements are a new council imitative that I am starting.  Thank you to everyone that filled out the survey that was sent out a few days ago.  That information will be used to award the first achievements.  Achievements will fully start in the fall, but if you have any ideas or suggestions send them my way.

  • A group of German students are attending a Bats game tomorrow and want to hang out with Speed School Students.  The game is tomorrow at 7:05 at Slugger field.
  • Summer fest: there will be a concert this Saturday in the Red Barn and another concert next Friday in the Red Barn.
  • Next Thursday there will be a blood drive in Vogt 314.
